Undergraduate Graduation Requirement
A student will be awarded a degree/Associate Degree/certificate at the Islamic Online University once the university and academic requirements, and the standards of performance of the program are met.
The Islamic Online University courses, structured as 3 credit hour courses, consists of recorded lectures by instructor and recorded supplementary sessions by faculty members. A student will earn 3 credit hours per successful completion of a course.
- BA / BSc / BEd Degree Course Credit Requirement
To obtain a BA/BEd/BSc/BBA degree, a student needs to complete the required courses including the BA/BEd /BSc/BBA thesis.

This track consists of 48 courses. Students who have been granted a waiver for Arabic, English or Computer will have to take one or more courses (equal to the number of courses waived) offered as "Waiver Replacement Courses" in order to complete the required 48 courses or 144 credit hours of academic courses.

To obtain a 2-year accredited Associate Degree, a student needs to complete a total of 24 courses or 72 credit hours of academic courses.

To obtain a BA, BEd or BSc degree, a student needs to complete a total of 216 hours of community service.

To obtain a 1-year accredited Certificate, a student does not need to complete any mandatory hours of community service.

The minimum requirement for a student to successfully complete each course is 60% mark, which must include the final exam score. No course is considered complete without the final exam at an IOU approved center where the identity of the student can be confirmed by his/her ID.
- BA / BSc / BEd Degree Course Score Requirement
To obtain a BA, BEd or BSc degree, a student needs to complete a total of 48 courses or 144 credit hours of academic courses including the BA / BEd / BSc thesis. The passing score for each course is 60% including the final examination score.
- 2-year Associate Degree Program Course Score Requirement
To obtain a 2-year accredited Associate Degree, a student needs to complete a total of 24 courses or 72 credit hours of academic courses. The passing score for each course is 60% including the final examination score.
- 1-year Certificate Program Course Score Requirement
To obtain a 1-year accredited Certificate, a student needs to complete a total of 12 courses or 36 credit hours of academic courses. The passing score for each course is 60% including the final examination score.
BA in Islamic Studies
- ARB Grammar I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII and VIII (total 8 courses; 24 credit hours) are compulsory courses with effect from Spring 2016 semester.
- If your batch of entry is from Spring 2010 to Fall 2015, then you need to complete 8 Arabic courses from ARB 100 to ARB Grammar I - VII or ARB Grammar I - VIII in a linear fashion. [ARB 100 is an optional course; only those students who do not know how to read and write in Arabic script may begin from ARB 100]
- If your batch of entry is Spring 2016 or later, then ARB Grammar I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII and VIII (total 8 courses; 24 credit hours) are compulsory courses for you and ARB 100 is an optional and noncredit course for you.
To obtain a BA, BEd or BSc degree, a student needs to successfully complete the BA / BEd / BSc thesis and obtain minimum passing score of 60%.
Thesis is not a graduation requirement for the 2-year Associate Degree program or 1-year Certificate program.
- Clearance from the Admissions Office
The successful completion of all categories of the undergraduate (degree/Associate Degree/certificate) programs include successful receipt of the attested (notarized) documents at the IOU Admissions Office in Gambia.
Required documents to be sent via airmail are the following two:
- An attested photocopy of high school Associate Degree or higher degree – bearing notary stamp and signature.
- A photocopy of passport. In case of passport unavailability, any other official photo ID may be accepted by the Admissions Office (national identity card, driving license, etc.).

The following documents may be required to be sent in case of credit transfer / course waiver received:
- Photocopies of university transcripts bearing proof of successful completion of relevant courses against which transfer credits have been received. Each document must bear notary stamp and a signature.
- Supporting documents (photocopy of university transcripts, etc.) bearing proof of successful completion of relevant courses against which courses have been waived off. Each document must bear notary stamp and a signature.
- Clearance from the IOU Payments Department
The graduation requirement for all categories of the undergraduate (degree/Associate Degree/certificate) programs include receiving “No Dues” clearance email from the IOU Payments Department.
The following list includes some of the university dues requiring clearance:
- Semester registration fee
- Course drop fee
- Credit transfer fee
- Grade transfer fee
- Internal credit transfer fee
- Late examination center registration fee
- Stream transfer fee
- Provisional transcript (hard copy) fee
- Provisional transcript (e-copy) fee
Any outstanding balance with IOU, i.e. dues, must be cleared prior to the graduation.
All students are required to pay a flat degree/Associate Degree/certificate processing fees of $200 USD, whether registered full-time or part-time, upon completion of the program prior to the graduation.
The fees cover attestation of the IOU accredited degree, Associate Degree or certificate and the postal charges.
Dual Program students must meet all of the following graduation criteria individually for each of the enrolled programs.
- Course credit requirement for all undergraduate courses
- Community service hours requirement for the BA / BSc / BEd and 2-year Associate Degree program
- Course credit requirement for all undergraduate courses
- Community service hours requirement for the BA / BSc / BEd and 2-year Associate Degree program
- Score requirement for all undergraduate courses
- Arabic requirement for BA in Islamic Studies students
- Thesis requirement for all BA / BSc / BEd students
